Public and private face

The interest in the falsity of the people we come across is triggered by the danger they may represent.

This morning I read this Nathaniel Hawthorne quote, which may be further and useful food for thought.

No man, for any considerable period,
can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude,
without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.

This difficulty in managing the public “face” represents precisely what betrays deception, which never lasts forever.

The important point is to realize it in time.
